Can I just put a mailbox up without permission?
April 282010
We live in a rural area and our house is right in the middle part of a "Y" in the road. We have about an acre and a half and our driveway goes from one road to the other. Our address and mailbox for some reason is at the road at the back side of our house. This makes it weird because people coming to my house arrive at the back and think it is the front. Then they start knocking on my basement door.
I went to the post office to ask them about it and they told me to call "911" because they were the ones who assigned addresses. So I called and explained. They offered to change my address to 211 on the other street which is in front of my house but said I would have to change it on all of my credit cards, mortgage paperwork, …everything. That would be very complicated at this point.
My questions is, Why cant I just keep the address I have and ALSO put up a mailbox on the road at the front of my house with the numbers 211 on it? The mailman drives that road anyway and it would be on the correct side of the street for him as well. Is there anything illegal about doing this? So is it legal to just put up a mailbox without asking permission?
Additional Details
I run a small business from home and therefore have more traffic than normal coming to my house for the first time. I do have a sign on the basement door but no-one seems to read it… But at the same time I don’t like people driving up from the back because it is not landscaped like the front. Also, I don’t think I can just move the mailbox I have because the two streets have different names and totally different addresses. I think the real issue here is guiding new visitors to my house to the front of my house and not the back.
If you use the same address you can put up as many mail boxes as you want, you only need permission if you want a different address.~
