Any advice on how to deter mailbox vandalism?

December 202009

Over the years I have replaced 7 curbside type mailboxes. I have tried the heavy duty kinds, the rubber kind, and tried putting it high, low, all to no avail. The baseball bat kids are winning! My mailbox is at the end of a long driveway, so I can’t monitor it. We are in a nice area with a private security guard. Once someone was caught and his mother replaced my mailbox. Now that one is gone.
I do not care for the brick mausoleum looking ones. Any experiences or suggestions?

Get a pretty wrought iron garden arch and place it over the mailbox. Just sink it deep enough into the ground at the bases. You could even plant a nice flowering vine on it. The vandals will not be able to hit the mailbox because it will be protected by the iron arch. Good luck.

get a fairly long post, dig a hole about a foot deep, put a foot of your post in the hole then fill with concrete… best to use an iron post. When they hit it a baseball bat they will get so much re-verb they will think twice before doing it again.
Did this myself & it fixed my problem with vandals.

find a welding shop in your area and explain your problem to them it won’t be cheap but a 6′ steel post filled with concrete is pretty well indestructable, and if they are any good they should be able to manufactur something that looks about like a regular mailbox out of 3/16" or 1/4′ steel plate pretty easy

A friend of ours had a big problem with the same thing. What they did was get two long steal pipes and sunk one into the ground on each side of their mail box that came up higher than the mail box stood by about 6 inches or so. That way when they swung at the box they hit the steel pipes and got the jar of their life. It stopped quick.

Hi Bren. Have you notified your local police about it? It’s a federal offense to vandalize mail boxes and if this is a recurring problem, maybe they can patrol your neighborhood a little more often.

    Hi Bren!

I agree with Diana. And the post office should be doing something this is not your responsibility. It is a malicious Mischief and contact the police. Good Luck.

One pound of C-4 (plastic explosive) on a pressure sensor, inside the box…works every time.

No trial, no reports to file.

It’s a federal offense. Contact your postmistress/master for the procedure. Federal tampering, it would seem to me, would enable the post office to call on its inspector to serve as surveillance. If not, I would file a complaint with the FBI.
