What a landlord can do depends on the terms of the least.

At most apartments, the landlord gives tenants one or two keys to the mailbox.

no. call a locksmith to change the lock, get your mail, and take the amount for the lock change off your rent. send a note saying, we had important stuff in there and couldn’t wait any longer.

Yes the landlord can have a locked mailblox and not give roomies a key. I suggest and it is a good idea for the roomies privacy and safety to invest in a PO box.

Only if it’s only his/her mail going to that box…he/she MUST provide you with your own mailbox or access to a community mailbox.

Sounds like you rent a room in someones house. But never the less, he cannot withhold your mail from you. That’s a federal offence. Even if he doesn’t touch it, he can’t keep you from being able to get to it on your own. It’s your mail. I would think about getting a Post Office Box, and in the meantime call your local Post Office or your local PD and find out exactly what your rights are.
Your landlord’s on some kind of power trip that ain’t cool.
    Good luck ! ! ! !

Your landlord should have no access to your mail. If they do not have enough keys for each lessor to have their own, then you can get duplicates made. As long as your individual apt. has been provided a key, then it may be up to you to make copies for everyone. If you have not been given any key to your mailbox, then that is a problem you need to talk to the landlord about.

No, unless it states otherwise in the lease

We need more precisions. Does this mean the mailbox is for the occupants rather than the landlord’s own mail, but he won’t give them even one key?

If the mailbox is for your mail and not his, You must have at least one key. Any extra can be made at your own expense. If he insists that only he have a key,go ask a lawyer, you might have an interesting case.

To hell with the landlord… YOU have the right to your mail ! Go to the post office and tell them… if they suggest a post office box then go for it!

Bypass the landlord and go above his/her head!
