how do I break into my mailbox without breaking the lock??

ok, so I lost my mailbox key, and im getting a new lock and key from the post office.. but its going to take a week, and im leaving town tomorrow, and need to get some packages in their.. i just need to get into it tonight.. I dont want to break it though?? got any ideas??

If it is a P.O. Box, it is a felony.

If it is an apartment mailbox that doesn’t belong to the USPS, call the manager. You could get into trouble for damaging their property.

If it is your personal mailbox that you purchased, you can do what you want.

Beware. The mailbox isn’t your property. Even if you paid for it, it’s federal property. In a situation like this you probably won’t be charged, but could be.
The lock will have to be drilled. Call a locksmith. (They may not do it because it’s a mailbox.) If you drill it yourself and cause damage to the box the post office most likely will charge you for it.

hi there, well this is a gud idea, i had to do it once when i was in the same situation as you, well, if its one of those boxes, just take a flathead screw driver or any other screw driver, and slowly slide it in your mail box where the door is, twist the door outwards, do it very little so there is a thin very thin space that the door is bented, then, take some tweezers or small pliers or anything that can grab the envelopes, this will work until you get the key, when your done just push the door back in and no1 will notice it, if you really gotta take out packages then you should just call the locksmith or better yet break the lock and be like you didnt do it! hope this helps lol

Sorry to say it but FELONY is what you are talking about. If you are being supplied a key or box by the USPS then it is federal property and breaking into a mailbox even to get your own mail is a FELONY.

Sorry, most likely isn’t the answer you are looking for but with security cameras everywhere you best be informed!

For a locksmith to legally open the box, a representative of the Postal Service has to be present.

When I owned a locksmith business I replaced many apertment box locks, and always had to make an appointment with the Post Office to meet a clerk at a specific time. Fortunatly, I had a good working relationship with the people at the post office, and they were very cooperative about meeting me at a time that was convenient for me.

If you get a locksmith involved, maybe he can get quicker action from the postal service, but it will cost you, of course. The locksmith has to be paid for his time.
