Mailbox

So im in college and they have combination mailboxes and i dont know how to open it there is no directions posted and when i asked the person at the desk they just gave me some snotty remark so can any1 help me out!. Its a number mailbox combination lock. I have the combo just dont know how to open it please help me out!?!?

Assuming there are 3 digits try both these ways.

1. Turn the dial left at least 2 turns and stop at the first number.
2. Turn the dial right and pass the first number and stop at the second number.
3. Turn the dial left and stop at the third number.

or

1. Turn the dial right at least 2 turns and stop at the first number.
2. Turn the dial left and pass the first number and stop at the second number.
3. Turn the dial right and stop at the third number.
