I am renting property from someone, is it against the law for them to place notices in my locked mailbox?

I have been renting property and on several occasions my landlord has gone into my locked mailbox to place notices for me. I am aware that she is the property owner but she no longer receives mail there and because I am now renting the property I dont believe she has the right to use her key to go into my mailbox? I feel like it is an invasion of my property/privacy and could border on the lines of mail tampering. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Totally illegal. Anything in a mailbox MUST have postage. Call the USPS in your area. She shouldn’t even have a key.

hmm…it’s very fishy. However, as long as she is not taking your mail, there’s nothing illegal going on because she owns the property. You could try politely talking to her about it and see what she says and go from there.

    In the US

Mailboxes are typically federal property, so what she’s doing is not legal, regardless of whether or not the mailbox is on her property. If she wants to place a notice, there is always the crack under the doorway. I’m certain about this; however, since I don’t know where you live, check with your local post office. They may come in to change the locks, and give you a new key, depending on the situation.

Mailboxes are federal property. Only mail carriers can put things into them. It’s a federal offense.

The mailbox is strictly for postal service use. She has no right to place anything in there that was not delivered by the post office. Even newspapers are not allowed to be placed in them. Talk to your Post Office.

I don’t think you have a case. Most mail boxes do not lock, so I don’t think there are rules around this. I mean anyone that has a regular old mailbox takes the chance that someone walking by can open it up and take/put what they want in/out of it. But it is highly illegal to take anything… so keep an eye out for anything missing. If she’s an honest woman than maybe you should lighten up. But if it’s making you uncomfortable I’d just ask her to stop doing it, maybe if she has something to give you she should mail it like everybody else. it’s not tampering unless she’s actually messing with your other mail. And now that I think about it what kind of notices is she giving you? The only kind of notices I ever hear of from landlords are evictions and property improvement (warnings of construction). So, how often is this happening?
