Is it legal for the Townhouse Association to deny access to your mailbox or mail until a certain time?

I live in a gated community, and they deny us the right to access our mail and mailbox until a certain time of the day. Even though the mailman has run already, this is just riduculous. What if you didn’t make it home in time to get your mail before they locked the gate?
When I was in the Military and were tasked to do certain work on the mail room, we sometimes REALLY needed to keep people out of the building for our convenience and efficiency. (Getting the jobs done faster and with less effort). However, we were instructed that it is illegal to deny people access to their mail, so it they were pricks about it and demanded to come in, we had no say.
So I would actually email the USPS and ask them. They are actually pretty quick on line.
