Is it illegal to post flyers in mailboxes?

Is it illegal to put flyers inside mailboxes in north carolina? What about right by the flag or in the little open box right under the mailbox? If it IS NOT legal, what will happen? What kind of charges will someone get?

Yes, it is illegal to put anything in a mailbox other than US mail. Usually, offenders just get a warning.
