Is it illegal to put flyers in mailboxes?

Hello-
I’d like to go around and distribute political flyers by placing them inside mailboxes. Is this legal? Do they have to be stamped or something?

Thanks.
So, just to confirm it will be ok if I slip the flyers in between the mailbox and the little flag?
Just in case the laws are different here, I live in Pennsylvania.
Thanks for your answers, I’ll choose the best one shortly.

No it is not legal.

Yes it is illegal to put them inside. Hook them to the outside so you don’t get in trouble. All it takes is one complaint to the Postal Service.

actually, it is not legal, but if you want to be sure, ask at your local post office. maybe it is addressed on the post office web site.

    Yes it is.
The only person allowed to put anything in a mailbox is the USPS.
Put the flyer by the little flag or by the took or basket.

Yes this is illegal the best thing to do is place it on their door or porch area where they enter their home. It is a federal offence to go into someone elses mailbox.
