Mailbox theft

Sydney Police have launched a major operation targeting mail theft and identity fraud in the North Sydney area.

Operation Gulliver is specifically targeting the theft of cheques and other items of value from private mailboxes.

Inquiries by police have revealed that stolen cheques are being altered or counterfeited and laundered through false bank accounts opened by so-called runners as part of an organised criminal enterprise.

Other documents, such as electricity bills or bank correspondence, are often stolen to facilitate the creation of those fake accounts.

Australia Post recommends all letterboxes be fitted with a reliable, secure lock.

Operation Gulliver is a police operation targeting this type of crime and was launched in January 2010.

Operation Gulliver is being run by Harbourside LAC (Nth Sydney) and Australia Post. The video provides a tangible example of this type of crime in progress.

So if the people people stealing the mail are also involved in other criminal activities, such as fraud, they will also be charged for those offences.
