At the moment I do not live in an area that is legally zoned as ‘residential.’ It is a commercial space that is known as an ‘artists’ studio building.’
I need to fill out a w4 form right now and I do not have a PO box yet. Should I just use my commercial space address? Does the w4 require that I disclose the address in which i live at, specifically, or does it want any address where I can receive mail addressed to my name? I do have a mailbox I can use for my Netflix account, etc.
Again, to clarify- I am temporarily living in a building that it is illegal to be living in, and I do not want the city/state/U.S. government to find out. It would be ideal if i could file my taxes at this address without risking my (and my roommates’ and neighbors’) residencies.
I just checked the form and it clearly states "Home Address" so just put your home address. It doesn’t matter what it is zoned. This is a form you fill out for your employer so they know how much income tax to withhold, that’s all. I think you’re analyzing it too much.
Give you employer your PO box when you get one if you’d like any mail from them to go there.
Good luck.
Any address where you get mail or from which you file your taxes is acceptable.

Your employer doesn’t care about the zoning on your home address. The purpose of the form is to designate your tax withholding – nothing more. The IRS never sees the W-4.

The address on the W-4 can be any address at which you receive mail. Not to worry about the zoning problems etc. arising from putting this address on your W-4.

If the address is in the same taxing jurisdiction, then it’s probably okay.
You can’t, for example, use an address in TX to avoid taxes in OK. Or an address in a suburb of Philadelphia to avoid city wage tax.
You do realize of course that if *any* of the residents in the building uses their correct address on a W-4, the address begins to appear on the radar.
