I recently had a home built on a previously vacant lot; this lot was once a part of a large parcel that was split into 4. When we started building, the city assigned an address to my parcel # and I used that address for all of the building permits. Is there anything special that I need to do (i.e. something I need to set up at the post office) to start "using" my address, or can I simply install a mailbox and start using the address? (This parcel is in a rural area, not in a subdivision but a private neighborhood.)
You need to go to the PO and apply for service. Bring your permit with that address and your name, etc. They have it listed, but they don’t know it is in use until you apply.
You also need to list with the 911 service, fire department and police. They will find out eventually, but it’s nice to know the fire department knows where you live.

Here you cannot use an address till there is a 911 number assigned to it. Once assigned you can go to the post office and place a change of address with them. Your part lot number/rural route/911/street name and number are all required here. Then you can put up a mailbox. That is how it works here.
